When
they come prepared! (Part 2)
This was new
to me because from where I come from (the State of Perak), we didn't
do things like that, I mean, sit down to analyse positions
together! But ...... (from last week)
....... my new friend from the previous round,
Kong Ah Then (I have to use his name at this stage), began to show me
the merits of sharing analysis. We found a quiet corner and began
looking at my game. While analysing the position, we found that 15....
Nf8 was really a bad move. Correct was 15 .... Bf8. After that move,
other good moves that could be used in this position include .....
Ne5, .....Qa5, ..... Qc5, and .... Nd3. I was still smarting from the loss
against Eric but I found some comfort that I didn't have to abandon
the line that I so love to play.
The understanding of that position paid off
one year later, when I had to face another Penang player playing the same line
against me! The actual battle only began after move 15.

Same position as the
game against Eric (last
week's issue) one
year ago. But this time I played ......
15 ..... Bf8

The
original game 442 from Informator 21, continued 15...Nf8
16.f6 gxf6 17.gxf6 Bd8 18.Qf4 Bxf6 19.Qxf6 Qe7 20.Qh6 Bd7 21.Nf5 exf5
22.Nd5 fxe4 23.Nxe7 Kxe7 24.Qh4 1 - 0. Notice the similarity between
the game and my game against Eric? At this stage, Yit Chuan had used
52 minutes compared to my 10 minutes!
16.Nxe6?!
Yit Chuan was one of the finest
attacking players at that time and after an hour played this
aggressive move. It was unsettling, believe me.
16
.....
Nxd3+?
A mistake. Correct was the
simple 16...fxe6 17.Qh5+ Kd8
18.Qf7 Qa5 19.fxe6 Nxe6 20.Qxe6 Qxg5+ 21.Kb1 Qf6.
17.cxd3
fxe6 18.Qh5+ Ke7? 19.Kb1?
Correct was 19.fxe6
Ne5 20.Rxf8 Kxf8 21.Qh8+ Ke7 22.Qxg7+ Kxe6 (22...Kd8 23.Qf8#) 23.
Qxc7. White was playing faster now as he had to make the
time-control of 40 moves for two and half hours.

Thank you Kong Ah Then.
