Chess 4 Life!
By Candidate Master Collin Madhavan

Where have all the players gone? -
Speaking to Yeoh Li Tian's dad

This week, we speak briefly to Yeoh Li Tian's dad on what his plans are for Li Tian. Li Tian's dad is Yeoh Chin Seng, 1993 Malaysian Champion. Here, the very shy Mr Yeoh Chin Seng shares some of his thoughts with us.

Collin:

Both your boys are doing very well in Chess. Recently, your younger one, Li Tian did the country proud by emerging joint fourth at the World Youth Chess
Championships in Turkey. Congrats from all of us!!

Chin Seng:

Thanks. But I think that he was lucky on two occasions.

Collin:

Capablanca once said that the good player is always lucky! So, do you
coach both your boys?

Chin Seng:

Yes.

Collin:

Well done, you're certainly doing a fine job with the both of them. So after
his recent emergence as a strong player at a world chess event, I believe
many things must be going through your mind. Can I know what are your
plans for the Li Tian?

Chin Seng:

No long term plan yet. Hopefully, I will work out an interim plan
for  year 2008 very soon. But whatever the plan is, a lot will very
much depend on:

* what Tian wants;

* how much time Tian can afford for chess training, without affecting
   his school lessons;

* how much time I can afford for chess coaching;

* how much money I can afford to pay for his participation in
   international events.  ):

Collin:

So, what is his next target?  Let's say for the next one year?

Chin Seng:

Recently, he's begun to dream of ' big-big' things in chess :-)!
Sorry but I can't tell them to you right now!! (ha, ha!). On my part, I need to
work with him and set interim targets. It's still a long journey, you know.

Collin:

What do you think he needs now?

Chin Seng:

Proper coaching scheme & more exposure in tournaments.

Collin:

As his parent and coach, what kind of help do you need to help develop
him further?

Chin Seng:

If possible, it will be very helpful to us to have some kind of  sponsorships,
for the fees & expenses incurred in coaching & tournaments.

We'll continue with this series next week. Happy New Year!!
