Chess 4 Life!
By Candidate Master Collin Madhavan

Chess Champ reappears after 25 years!!

After an absence of more than 25 years (!!), Tony Tay Chong Thai reappears on the Malaysian Chess scene by playing in the Russian Embassy Chess Open in June 2007. What a long break!! But still, it becomes apparent when you speak to him, that his passion for the game has not diminished one bit. So apart for his residing hairline ):, he has not changed very much - he is still soft spoken, generous with his smiles and still a Chess power!!

For the record, Tony represented the country at a number of international tournaments which included the 1974 World Junior Championships in Manila, and a number of Asian Team and Asian Cities Chess Championships.

And for now, the 1979 Malaysian Chess Champion plans to gradually begin playing more Chess, if not, competitively, at least, some weekend Chess with a couple of old friends. If all works out well, you can catch him playing at this year's Merdeka Team Chess Tournament. Below is a nice game from the 80's between Tony and Woo Beng Keong, one of strongest players of that period.
