English: On the 8th of December, 2007, Candidate Master Collin Madhavan set a new Malaysian Simul Record when he played against 71 chess players simultaneously in Kuala Lumpur. The final results: 56 wins, 12 draws and 3 losses. Certificates were given to all participants and the feat was entered into the Malaysia Book of Records (MBR). The original number of opponents was set at 69 but the 2 additional players were allowed to play so as not to disappoint them.

International trip for chess duo

Siblings Puteri Rifqah Azhar and Muhammad Shakir Shazmeer Azhar will be heading for Antalya, Turkey for the World Youth Chess championships on Nov 17-29. The trip was made possible by Westports Malaysia executive chairman Tan Sri G. Gnanalingam who is sponsoring it.  

Puteri Rifqah, 8, and Muhammad Shakir, 13, come from Jenjarom, Banting. The duo had been selected to represent the country after winning their respective age groups in the national championships. 

Puteri Rifqah will be taking part in the Under-8 age group while Muhammad Syakir in the Under-14 category. 

The siblings’ father Azhar Mohamed Said is an employee with Westports Yard Planning Department.  

“I am grateful to Tan Sri G. Gnanalingam for giving an opportunity to my children to take part in the championships,” said Azhar.

Chess tourney

THE 12th Rakan Muda GACC (Grand Asean Chess Challenge) World Inter-Varsity Championships 2007 will be held at the Auditorium Perdana Siswa, Universiti Malaya, from Nov 4 to 12. 

The tournament is organised under the auspices of the Malaysian Chess Federation with support from the Youth and Sports Ministry.  

Each university can send in a maximum of two teams, each comprising a minimum of four participants, including one female. The maximum number of participants per team is six.

English: On the 11th of August, 2007, Candidate Master Collin Madhavan set a new Malaysian Simul Record when he played against 59 chess players simultaneously in Kuala Lumpur. After 3 and a half hours, Collin was victorious and ended the event undefeated. The final results: 56 wins, 3 draws and no losses. Certificates were given to all participants and the feat was entered into the Malaysia Book of Records (MBR).
